Asylum Seeker Wellbeing Service
At East End Health Network 2, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for asylum seekers within our community. Our Asylum Seeker Wellbeing Service is designed to address the unique health needs of this group and ensure they receive the full spectrum of healthcare support.
Registration and Health Checks
Once registered with one of our four practices, asylum seekers are integrated into our care system and their records are updated to reflect any previous medical history.
We conduct thorough New Patient Health Checks, which include routine measurements such as blood pressure, BMI, and blood tests, as well as additional screenings for blood-borne diseases like HIV, TB, and Hepatitis B and C. As registered patients, they also become eligible for essential services such as cancer screenings.
Comprehensive Care
Our service goes beyond basic healthcare to include a range of vital support:
- Vaccinations: We provide all necessary vaccinations, including those for diphtheria, flu, pneumococcal disease, COVID-19, and childhood immunizations, tailored to the patient’s age and health needs.
- Long-Term Conditions: Patients identified with long-term conditions are added to our LTC register, with ongoing reviews to ensure they receive appropriate management and support.
- Referrals: We facilitate necessary referrals to specialist services, including mental health support, drug and alcohol services, maternity care, paediatrics for unaccompanied minors, and health visiting services for young children.
- Trauma-Informed Care: For young people, we approach care with sensitivity to experiences of trauma and abuse, ensuring that injuries are documented and appropriate referrals are made.
- Physical and Mental Health Assessments: We conduct general physical assessments, addressing skin conditions, respiratory concerns, nutritional deficiencies, oral health, pregnancy, contraception, and mental health issues.
- Patient Education: We provide education and self-care advice to empower patients to manage their health effectively.
- Care Coordination: We keep a record of other agencies involved in the patient’s care and conduct a thorough review of their medications and medical history.
Through this comprehensive approach, we aim to ensure that asylum seekers receive the care they need to achieve and maintain good health, while navigating the complexities of their circumstances.
